Aren’t you tired of your worn-out, plain white (dirty looking) grocery shopping bag too? Why not make one for yourself with your own signature!
Don’t we all have this used, worn-out shopping bag and when we’re doing groceries, we left it somewhere in the car or at the house ? Because it means nothing special to us? It’s just plain white or old, used and dirty? Well, here is the solution to this problem:
Sew your own shopping bag (and decorate it with a crown 😉 ). This bag is designed to be stylish but practical, keeping your groceries safe. Not only does it have an internal pocket to store your wallet and key, etc., but it also has a bottom to fit more groceries inside.
And here is how it’s done:
Hint: I have included a PDF download file for you at the end of this post.
You will need:
- Bag Fabric: You need a rectangular piece of fabric that is 92 x 47cm (36 x 18 1/2 in). Seam allowance of 1 cm (3/8 in) included.
- Straps: For the straps you need two pieces that are 50 x 12 cm (20 x 5 in). Seam allowance of 1 cm (3/8 in) included.
- Inner Pocket: For the pocket inside the bag you can cut a rectangle of 27 x 30 cm (11 x 12 in), or use the pattern included in the PDF. Seam allowance of 1 cm (3/8 in) included.
Of course you may change the size according to your liking, I have found this size to be just the right one for me. - Fabric type: I have used a thick linen/cotton mix that I got at IKEA’s. This fabric is quite thick and I believe it was intended for furniture, so it is great for the purpose of keeping your groceries safe instead of ripping apart.
- Thread: I have used normal polyester thread in the same color of the fabric. As this bag is unlined, a same color thread comes very handy for hiding the inner seam finishes.
Quick description:
- Create the straps and the inner pocket
- Attach inner pocket
- Close sides of bag and finish seams (serge or zigzag)
- Finish top of bag
- Create bag bottom
- Add straps
- Add crown 😉
How to build the straps and inner pocket:
Start off by turning in the seam allowance on the short sides of the straps and pressing them (1 and 2). Then, fold the straps in half lengthwise and press again (3). Next, fold the outer sides in towards the center fold you have just created (4) – again press. Lay all the folds to the inside and sew along all sides, long and short ones, to stabilize the straps (5).
Sewing the inner pocket
The inner pocket is folded in half like shown in the picture (6). Now sew along the seam lines, leaving an opening at the bottom of the pocket of about 10 cm. Turn the pocket inside out through this opening and press it. Sewing this pocket onto the bag fabric later will close the opening, so you don’t need to close it manually.
How to put the shopping bag together:
Place the inner pocket about 10 cms away from one short end of the wrong side of the bag fabric and align it to the center (7). Pin and sew all around the sides and bottom of the pocket, this will close the opening we had left earlier.
Now fold over the shopping bag fabric with wrong sides together (the inner pocket must be on the outside at this step) and sew the bag’s sides. You can choose to serge these seams with a serger or by using zigzag stitching. Don’t leave these seams unfinished as the fabric might unravel and cause your groceries to fall all over the place…
Once you have finished the sides, fold the complete top to the outside for 1 cm (3/8 in). Press all around. Then fold it over again and press. Stitch along the top to keep the folds down, you can even use a cute embroidery stitch for this step or zigzag.
Create bag bottom
I have created a bottom in my shopping bag so that more or bigger grocery items can fit in. In order to do so, fold the side seam open and lay it onto the bag bottom so that the fabric is equally spread onto both sides of the side seam:
I have used a geometric ruler to find the exact center (the side seam should be the center) and to mark 5 cm (2,5 in) down from the edge. Pin and stitch along this marking to create your bottom. You can then cut off the remaining fabric (the little triangle where my geometric ruler is lying on) and serge finish the seams or use a zig zag stitch. Do the same on the other side of the bag, turn your bag to the right side and admire the result 🙂
Adding the straps
Take one of your staps, lay them onto the top of the bag and align them to your own liking.
Pin them, align the other strap just like the front (or back), and pin those as well. Now sew them onto the fabric. I usually sew them on creating a rectangular shape first and then I sew crosses into each center, so they are sewn on really tight and can carry all the weight.
Tadaaaa. Your bag is finished, but now it needs some decoration. If you would like to add a crown to it just like I have done, wait for my next post. I will share the design with you and explain to you how I’ve put it onto the bag.
Voilà! Next time I go for groceries, people will hold the doors open for me, haha 🙂

Wir haben doch alle diese ausgeleierte, langweilig bedruckte Einkaufstasche, die wir, wenn wir sie mal brauchen, zuhause vergessen haben. Weil sie nichts Besonderes ist, weil sie langweilig ist, oder alt und schmutzig? Hier ist die Lösung für das Problem:
Näh dir einfach deine eigene (und dekoriere sie mit einer Krone) 🙂
Diese Tasche ist nicht nur stylish, sondern auch praktisch: Sie trägt deine Einkäufe sicher und hat im Inneren noch eine kleine Tasche für das Portemonnaie oder den Schlüssel. Außerdem hat diese Tasche einen Boden, so dass mehr hineinpasst.
Und so wird sie genäht:
Hinweis: Am Ende des Artikels befindet sich eine PDF-Datei zum Download des Schnittmusters für die Innentasche.
Du benötigst:
- Stoff für Tasche: Schneide ein rechteckiges Stoffstück zu mit den Maßen 92 x 47cm. Die Nahtzugabe von 1 cm ist bereits mit eingerechnet.
- Henkel: Für die Henkel benötigst du zwei Stoffstreifen mit den Maßen 50 x 12 cm. Nahtzugabe von 1 cm ist bereits mit eingerechnet.
- Innentasche: Für die Innentasche schneidest du ein rechteckiges Stoffstück mit den Maßen 27 x 30 cm (11 x 12 in), oder benutze das Schnittmuster in der angehängten PDF-Datei. Die Nahtzugabe von 1 cm ist bereits mit eingerechnet.
Natürlich kannst du die Größe der Tasche, der Innentasche, oder sogar der Henkel wie gewünscht ändern, für mich ist dies einfach genau die richtige Größe für eine Einkaufstasche. - Stoffart: Ich habe ein dickeres Leinengemisch benutzt, das ich mal im IKEA gefunden hatte. Der Stoff ist so stark, dass er vermutlich auch für das Beziehen von Möbelstücken benutzt werden könnte, daher kam es mir für eine Einkaufstasche gerade recht, damit der Stoff nicht einreißt, wenn die Tasche gerade voll ist…
- Garn: Normales Polyestergarn in derselben Farbe wie der Stoff. Da die Tasche kein Futter hat, sieht man sonst die Fäden des Innensaums. Man kann aber auch absichtlich kleine, bunte Akzente setzen.
Kurzübersicht:
- Fertige die Henkel und die Innentasche an
- Nähe die Innentasche auf
- Nähe die Seitennähte der Tasche. Versäubern mit der Overlock oder Zick-Zack-Stich.
- Oberkante der Tasche versäubern.
- Taschenboden fertigstellen.
- Henkel annähen.
- Krone aufbügeln 😉
Wie man die Henkel fertigstellt:
Falte die Nahtzugabe der kurzen Seiten nach innen und bügele diese Falte (Bild 1 und 2). Falte jetzt den Henkel einmal mittig der Länge nach und bügele diese Falte wieder (3). Jetzt legst du die äußeren langen Kanten nach innen an diese neue Falte (4) und bügelst ebenfalls noch einmal darüber. Lege alle Falten nach innen und nähe jetzt entlang aller Kanten der fertig zusammengefalteten Henkel, um diesen Halt zu verschaffen (5).
Nähen der Innentasche
Die Innentasche faltest du einmal zur Hälfte, wie im folgenden Bild (6). Steppe jetzt die Innentasche zusammen wie im Bild angezeigt, so dass du unten eine Wendeöffnung von ca 10 cm hinterlässt. Wende die Tasche durch diese Öffnung und bügele sie glatt. Die Öffnung brauchst du jetzt nicht zu schließen, sie wird durch das Annähen an die Einkaufstasche automatisch mitgeschlossen.
Einkaufstasche zusammensetzen:
Lege die Innentasche so auf den Stoff der Einkaufstasche (Innenseite), dass die Innentasche ca 10 cm von der Oberkante absteht (7) und mittig liegt. Stecke sie fest und nähe die Seiten und Unterkante der Innentasche fest. So wird dann auch die Wendeöffnung geschlossen.
Lege jetzt die kurzen Kanten der Einkaufstasche so aufeinander, dass die Innentasche außen liegt und nähe die Seiten fest. Die Seitennähte kannst du entweder mit der Overlock versäubern, oder mit einem Zickzack-Stich. Auf jeden Fall solltest du sie versäubern, sonst könnte es passieren, dass der Stoff einreißt und die Tasche auseinanderfällt, während du gerade die Orangen durch die Stadt trägst…
Wenn du die Seitennähte fertiggestellt hast, klappe nun die Oberkante der Tasche ca 1cm nach außen und bügele. Klappe sie dann noch einmal nach unten, bügele und nähe die umgeklappten Kanten fest. Dazu kannst du den Geradstich, Zickzack, oder sogar einen hübschen Zierstich verwenden.
Taschenboden Anfertigen
Für meine Tasche habe ich einen Boden angefertigt, damit mehr Weite entsteht und somit mehr Waren hineinpassen. Um den Boden anzufertigen, legst du die Seitennähte so auf den unteren Teil der Tasche, dass beidseitig der Naht gleich viel Stoff absteht:
Ich habe ein Geo-Dreieck dazu benutzt, die genaue Mitte zu ermitteln (die Seitennaht ist die Mitte) und 5 cm von der oberen Ecke abzumessen. Stecke die Markierung fest und nähe genau entlang dieser, damit der Boden der Tasche entsteht. Jetzt kannst du den abstehenden Rest (das kleine Dreieck) abschneiden und die Nahtzugabe mit der Overlock oder Zickzack-Stich versäubern. Mach das gleiche mit der anderen Seite der Tasche, wende dann die Tasche auf die richtige Seite und bewundere dein Ergebnis 🙂
Henkel anbringen
Nimm einen deiner Henkel und stecke ihn so fest, wie es für dich am besten erscheint. Stecke den Henkel fest.
Nimm dir nun den anderen Henkel und stecke ihn so an der anderen Seite fest, dass er genau so liegt wie der erste. Jetzt nähst du die Henkel an deiner Tasche fest. Ich mache es so, dass ich zuerst ein Quadrat oder Rechteck nähe, und dann noch ein paarmal kreuzweise darüber nähe, damit die Henkel richtig fest sitzen und die Last aushalten.
Tadaaaa. Und fertig ist deine neue Einkaufstasche. Aber jetzt brauchst du noch ein wenig Dekoration. Wenn du auch eine solche Krone aufbügeln möchtest, warte auf mein nächstes Posting. Dort teile ich dann die Krone als PDF-Vorlage mit dir und erkläre dir, wie ich sie an der Tasche angebracht habe.
