One of my friends and her husband like to travel to the African continent, mainly to Morocco and Namibia. The thing I like most about their travelling is that they plan their own trips so they get to discover nature at its best. They are interested in the people, their cultures and traditions and come back with fascinating stories about them.

Naturally, this year, they decided to celebrate an African themed birthday party together. They invited people to wear African-inspired clothing, they’d have different types of African foods and even a small band that played African music (from different countries).

So of course I had to accept the challenge, draft my own type of African dress and sewed it up. Can you see how proud I was?

I bought the fabric at a fabric market in Luxembourg, it is a real African Wax Print.

The sewers amongst you will want to know a little more about the pattern. I chose to have princess seams for the front bodice and end them right at the corners of the neckline.

In the front of the skirt, I wanted the pieces to overlap each other asymmetrically and the rushing to start higher than in the back. Here is a detailed view:

Eine meiner Freundinnen und ihr Mann reisen gern auf den afrikanischen Kontinent. Marokko und Namibia gehören zu ihren Hauptzielen. Das Tolle daran ist, sie gestalten ihre Reisen immer so, dass sie möglichst viel unverfälschte Landschaft entdecken können und diese meistens auf eigene Faust erkunden. Außerdem interessieren sie sich für die Kultur und Traditionen der Einheimischen und bringen darüber tolle Geschichten mit zurück.

Auf diesem Bild hat sich eine kleine Maus versteckt, findest du sie? 😉

So kam es, dass sie in diesem Jahr ihren Geburtstag gemeinsam unter dem Motto „Afrika“ gefeiert haben. Es gab afrikanisches Essen aus verschiedenen Ländern und eine kleine Band sorgte für afrikanische Musik (ebenfalls querbeet). Auf der Einladung stand, sie würden sich freuen, wenn man sich getreu dem Motto kleide… also habe ich das in die Tat umgesetzt, ein Schnittmuster erwerkelt und mir ein afrikanisch inspiriertes Kleid genäht. Siehst du wie stolz ich dreinschaue?

Den Stoff habe ich auf dem Stoffmarkt in Luxemburg gekauft, es ist ein echter Wax-Print (afrikanische KünstlerInnen und HandwerkerInnen bedrucken Stoffe auf diese Art von Hand. Bei Karlotta Pink gibt’s eine tolle Erklärung dafür: Wax Prints.)

Für alle die sich auskennen, es handelt sich um Wiener Nähte am Vorderteil, die genau auf die Ausschnittkanten treffen.

Vorne wollte ich, dass der Rockteil asymmetrisch überlappt und die Rüschen höher ansetzen, als hinten. Hier eine Detailansicht:
